Eventually deciding to try and force open a black hole within Surtur, the heroes gather their last remaining weapons and charges back into battle. Ultimately, only a handful of heroes like Superman, Huntress, Green Lantern, Wildcat, Hawkgirl, Fury, the Flash, Starman, Sandman, Aquaman and Johnny Thunder survive long enough to try and come up with a new plan. Power Girl remains behind to cover the escape of the other remaining heroes and is seemingly killed as well. An errant blast from Surtur proves strong enough to burn Superman and kill Wonder Woman. Even the coming of the Spectre isn't enough to turn the tide, with Surtur quickly overwhelming the exhausted spirit and biting his head off. Grabbing Hawkwoman and using her as a weapon in his hands, Surtur is able to crash her Nth Metal mace against Doctor Fate's head - separating it from his body and removing the power of Nabu from the battle. Heroes like Vigilante and Jade are either brought down by Surtur's fire or by his minions.
With a single swing of his firey sword, Surtur kills Hawkman and the Silver Scarab. The All-Star Squadron initially does their best, but the first battle doesn't go well. Surtur even bragged about how easily he'd slayed Hal Jordan, revealing that he merely bit his arm off and spat out the Green Lantern ring before setting Hal's blood itself on fire. Surtur laid waste to the League, killing all of them. The absence of their Superman - who'd been taken into a pocket dimension by instead of the Earth-2 Superman - left the Justice League unprepared for the battle. But in the end, the Justice Society was able to repel the firey mythic force of destruction Surtur, locking him in an endless war and saving the Earth - at the cost of the team's imprisonment.īut in the Dark Multiverse, a reality exists where it was the exhausted and less experienced heroes of Earth-1 who were left to fight Surtur on an unfamiliar Earth-2 instead of the other way around. After the events of Crisis, the last survivors of Earth-2's Justice Society realized the threat to Earth-1 caused by the Spear of Destiny in the wake of the Anti-Monitor's attack.
In the core DC Universe, the DC version of Surtur's coming led to the " Last Days of the Justice Society" by Roy Thomas, David Ross, and Mike Gustovich. During Crisis on Infinite Earths, one Asgardian villain came close to wiping out the DC Universe, and one version of him actually succeeded. However, there is a DC Universe version of Asgard as well, and it includes many of the same mythological villains who are most associated with the Marvel Universe today.
